Debating

Teacher-in-charge: Ms S. Mylchreest
Description of Activity
Fourways High School has a proud history in Debating. We have been finalists and semi finalists in the SACEE Debating league and are one of the stronger Debating teams in Gauteng. Currently, we are ranked 8th in Gauteng in the Junior League and 23rd in the Senior League. Most of our speakers have gone off to become leading journalists, academics and lawyers.
The activity is considered a premiere speaker sport in the school where students compete against each other in structured and researched debates that deal with topics on world history, current affairs, politics, and constitutional matters. Fourways High has both a junior and senior team that comprises of five core speakers and a floor. Each speaker has a designated role where an argument is proposed or opposed in a speech that is 5- 7 minutes long. Often topics are given on the day of the debate and students have only an hour to prepare. This allows for lively and entertaining debating for which Fourways High School Debating is known for.
A student who wishes to participate in this activity should have a broad general knowledge and an affinity with the English language as well as interests in history and politics.
